Take a nap on the veranda to the echoes of the suikinkutsu, an acoustic Japanese garden ornament

CASA lab is an accommodation centered around exploring the Japanese concept of “wa.” To introduce this concept, we have prepared a small program for you to experience.

① Garden Introduction
Begin with an introduction to the garden, covering the basics of Japanese garden design, the process of renovating the inner garden, the traditional Japanese garden ornament suikinkutsu, and more.

② Garden Experience
Then, explore the garden at your own pace. Doze off to the soothing echoes of the suikinkutsu, lie back and gaze at the sky from the center of the garden, light the lanterns, enjoy tea while taking in the garden view from the window, and more.

③ Social Gathering
Afterwards, those who wish to join can take part in a social gathering with the hosts and other participants (additional fee—see Option ②).

④ Overnight Stay
Finally, experience an overnight stay at CASA lab, limited to five guests (additional fee—see option ③).

Meet the Hosts

Treasures Found Here

Suikinkutsu

A wonderful way to enjoy Japanese gardening. A buried jar hidden away from plain sight, its delicate echoes can only be heard when water is dripped into its hidden cavity. Be sure to listen carefully!

The All-too-Splendid Stone Lantern and Chozubachi

The huge stone lantern and chozubachi make an impressive statement in this ordinary townhouse garden—almost too grand for a commoner’s home! The use of such beautiful stone is a quintessentially Hagi touch.

A Traditional Townhouse Over 100 Years Old

A typical townhouse with a long, narrow layout and a garden at the center of the house. The traditional wooden doors and screens, which evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era, are another highlight.
