In a unique world where old Edo-period houses and art come together, let’s have fun making dolls and eating pita bread!

Upon arriving, you may notice the home looks like an Edo-period house, but something’s a little… different. The first thing you notice is the huge pink object extending from the counter, and looking up, you see a life-sized doll enshrined on a heavy beam from the Edo period. Unique artworks like fairies and spirits peek out from all around, and you realize—this is a world created by artist Yuuji Kunimoto himself.

Also on display are the pottery of Dotei Yoshida—Yuuji Kunimoto’s ancestor—an artist who elevated the reputation of Obata Yaki as an artistic handicraft at the end of the Edo period, and works of Kaneo Mizunuma, an oil painter who meticulously depicted the scenery of Hagi. In this creative space, we will hold a workshop to make your own, one-of-a-kind doll. Lunch includes a delicious pita sandwich.

Obata Yaki by the incredibly talented late-edo period artist, Dotei Yoshida

An ancestor of the Kunimoto family, Dotei Yoshida opened the Kunimoto Kiln in Obata, Hagi, at the end of the Edo period. He was a pioneer in making white porcelain in Hagi and also renowned for his paintings. His pottery is currently exhibited at the Hagi Yaki Assembly Hall, and the remains of his kiln can still be found on the mountain behind Yuuji’s family home.

Our authentic pita sandwich

A recipe we learned during our time residing in Israel. Give it a try with falafel, hummus and local vegetables from Hagi.
