Let’s do some fun craft with bamboo fibers!
Did you know that you can make paper using bamboo? After showing you the process of making paper from Hagi’s bamboo, we will then scoop fibers out from small bamboo pieces to make the parts of our hanging mobile. There will be five seperate parts to create the mobile—I hope you will have fun coming up with designs and ways to balance them! Once the fibers have dried, your hanging mobile is complete. I wonder what the finished product will look like?
Meet the Host
Keiko Taoyama | Bamboo Asobi Hakobae
I enjoy making washi (Japanese-style paper) with bamboo. In Hagi, bamboo is readily available to use. I feel so fortunate that I can craft things such as paper from this bamboo, and I hope to introduce bamboo crafts to as many people as possible.
You can make so many different things using bamboo fibers in particular. Let’s give it a go!
Schedule
- Introduction to bamboo grown in Hagi and bamboo crafts.
- Explanation of making paper from bamboo.
- Make a postcard-sized piece of paper using bamboo fibers.
- Begin making your hanging mobile.
- Wait for the hanging mobile to dry.
- Your hanging mobile is complete!
- Enjoy everyone’s finished mobiles by hanging them together.
*Schedule may change due to weather conditions, etc.

Treasures Found Here
Hagi’s bamboo
Hagi has a lot of bamboo forests, many of which are overgrown. Unfortunately, much of this bamboo rots before it can be used, so I want to show people the potential of using bamboo as a craft material. In fact, bamboo was once used to build the earthen walls of Hagi Castle Town, as well as for baskets to transport summer oranges. It has long been a familiar material in Japan.
Bamboo paper
Have a look and feel of the different design and texture of bamboo paper.
Bamboo fibers
There is a special kind of brightness found in bamboo fibers—you can even make lamp shades from them.
