Trace the remnants and unravel the mysteries of Hagi’s retro past

During the Edo period, a merchant district developed along the Onarimichi Road, which extended from Hagi Castle and was used by the lords of the Choshu Domain.
Around the Tamachi area, rows of traditional wooden townhouses with entrances facing the street were home to a variety of specialty shops, making the area a bustling gathering place for people and all kinds of merchandise.

In the Showa period (1926-1989), Tamachi continued to thrive as the commercial center of Hagi, with the only department store in northern Yamaguchi Prefecture and Hagi’s first supermarket both opening here. On this walking tour, you’ll rediscover the highlights and history of Tamachi with a curator from Hagi Museum.

Tamachi Shopping Arcade

A street built along the Onarimichi Road, which was used by the lords of the Choshu Domain when they had to travel to Edo (now Tokyo) to wait upon the shogun as part of the alternate attendance (sankin-kotai) system. Even after the addition of the arcade roof, many historic buildings remain today.

Shinbori Waterway

A drainage channel developed during the Edo period. Although its appearance has gradually changed over time, it continues to play a role in the daily lives of people in Hagi today.
