Step back in time among the quaint red-roof tiled townhouses of Sasanami!

Here at Sasanami, we have prepared a number of fun events for you to enjoy:

1. Guided tour of the Sasanami Preservation District (reservation required)
2. Sasanami tofu-making workshop (reservation of 2 to 6 people required)
3. Sasanami Autumn Festival, which includes free servings of sweet rice porridge, guided walks through the town by local elementary school students, and a quiz rally (with prizes for those who answer everything correctly!)

*Reservations for the guided tour and tofu-making are accepted on an ongoing basis. The Autumn Festival is scheduled for November 8 only.

Schedule

Guided tour of Sasanami:
  1. Meet at Hagi Okan Tearoom (Former Kobayashi Family Residence)
  2. Explore the history and cultural assets of the Sasanami-ichi Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

    (Former Kobayashi Family Residence → Merchant and artisan neighborhood of Nakanocho → Lodging neighborhood of Kaminocho → Ruins left by the Battle of Sasanami → tea house → the waterway intersection → Kosatsuba (a public noticeboard from the Edo period) → Kudoshi neighborhood → Saiganji Temple)
  3. Tea break at the Hagi Okan Tearoom (Former Kobayashi Family Residence)
  4. Finish
Sasanami Tofu-Making Workshop:
  1. Meet at Hagi Okan Tearoom (Former Kobayashi Family Residence)
  2. Introduction to the tofu-making process
  3. Make your own tofu
  4. If desired, enjoy the tofu you made or a tofu dish
  5. Finish (Workshop takes around 2 hours)
Special events held alongside the Autumn Festival (Nov. 8):

・Mochimaki (a Japanese custom where rice cakes are thrown into the air for people to catch) at Asahi Community Center
・Special Guided Tour by Local Elementary School Students (morning only)
・Quiz rally (prizes for those who answer all questions correctly)
・Prize lottery
・Free serving of sweet rice porridge
・Activities at Sasanami Community Center and Roadside Station

Sasanami-ichi Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings

After Sasanami was designated as an Important Preservation District for a Group of Traditional Buildings by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the local community came together to form the Hagi Okan Sasanami Doshinte Yaro Society, where we work together to develop the town.
