Special Guided Tour of Meirinkan & Local Delicacies: Bakumatsu Bread and Itokoni Soup

Join us at Hagi Meirin Gakusha, located on the historic site of the former Hagi Domain School Meirinkan. A dedicated guide will give you a special tour, sharing the history of the school and the scientific advances of the late Edo period.

Afterwards, enjoy two unique dishes: Bakumatsu Bread, a type of portable ration once carried on the battlefield, and Itokoni, a traditional simmered dish from Hagi, lovingly prepared by local Café and Restaurant Hagi Goyomi.

Meet the Host

NPO Hagi Meirin Gakusha

This program is provided by a team of volunteers from a non-profit organization that manages and operates the Meirin Gakusha in cooperation with the local city government.

Discover the legacy of the Meirinkan school, and taste both “Bakumatsu Bread” and Hagi’s local cuisine.

The Hagi Domain School Meirinkan, a National Historic Site

The Hagi Domain School Meirinkan was built in 1849 to educate the children of the retainers of the Mori Clan (Hagi Domain). The school grounds included a schoolhouse, a martial arts training facility, and space for military drills.

Hagi Meirin Gakusha, a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property

One of the largest wooden schoolhouses in Japan, located on the site of the former Domain School.

Itokoni

A traditional dish of Hagi, served for generations at weddings, funerals, and celebratory banquets.
