Our exclusive guide will provide an informative tour of the Hagi Domain School Meirinkan, offering insights into Japan’s pioneering science and technology during the late Edo period, as well as Hagi’s World Heritage Sites. Meet the Host

NPO Hagi Meirin Gakusha

This tour is provided by a team of volunteers from a non-profit organization that manages and operates the Meirin Gakusha in cooperation with the local city government.

We hope you enjoy your time at Hagi Meirin Gakusha, one of the largest wooden school buildings in Japan, built on the site of the Hagi Domain School Meirinkan.

The Yubikan Hall, a remaining structure of the Hagi Domain School Meirinkan. It was used as a place to practice sword fighting and spearmanship.

Cannons and weapons used during the Civil Upheaval of the Bakumatsu era, exhibited at the Bakumatsu Museum. The collection also includes items relating to astronomy, geography, medicine and more.
The Suiren Pond, used during the feudal government period for learning swimming and horseback riding in water. Suiren Pond is the only remaining such site in Japan.
Built in 1935 on the site of the Hagi Domain School Meirinkan, this two-story wooden schoolhouse has a fascinating story to tell. After operating as an elementary school for over 80 years, it is now the new hub for tourism in Hagi.

The Hagi Domain School Meirinkan, a National Historic Site

The Hagi Domain School Meirinkan was built in 1849 to educate the children of the retainers of the Mori Clan (Hagi Domain). The school grounds included a schoolhouse, a martial arts training facility, and space for military drills.

Hagi Meirin Gakusha, a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property

One of the largest wooden schoolhouses in Japan, located on the site of the former Domain School.
