Sanmi was once a thriving inn town along the Akamagaseki Highway, serving travelers during the Edo period. Kou, a young resident of the area, has given a couple of \u201cakiya,\u201d<\/em> or houses that have been vacant for a long period of time, a new lease on life through renovation. One of these akiya<\/em>, called Kaname<\/em>, now operates as a holiday rental. During your visit, you\u2019ll tour Kaname<\/em> and Kosandou<\/em>, a century-old akiya<\/em> that has been renovated into a cozy space next door. Over tea at Kosandou<\/em>, you can chat with Kou about akiya<\/em>, moving to the Japanese countryside, and the many possibilities of giving old homes a new life.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Utilizing local akiya<\/em> houses, Kou has opened Kosandou<\/em>, a small community center, and Kaname<\/em>, a holiday rental. He hopes they can become places where everyone can relax and feel at home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

  3. Chat over tea about vacant houses, moving to the countryside, and life in a renovated old house with Kou<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Free time (Feel free to browse for antiques and unique goods at Kosandou<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Overnight stay at Kaname<\/em> (BBQ available upon request)<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    The charming red roof-tiled home, Kosandou<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    Originally built 100 years ago, Kou renovated the traditional Japanese house himself and now uses it as both his own home and a shop selling various goods.
    The holiday rental Kaname<\/em> was built 50 years ago and was also completely renovated by Kou himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Sanmi and the Akamagaseki Highway<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    The road right in front of Kosandou<\/em> and Kaname<\/em> was originally an Edo period highway connecting the castle town of Hagi with Shimonoseki City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Sanmi Bridge<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    A beautiful stone bridge built in 1914, within a short walking distance from Kosandou<\/em> and Kaname<\/em>. It is one of the biggest stone-built arch bridges in Yamaguchi Prefecture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
