The Horiuchi Preservation District, once part of Hagi Castle\u2019s Sannomaru<\/em> (outer bailey), is a vast former samurai residential area and a registered World Heritage Site within UNESCO\u2019s \u2018Sites of Japan\u2019s Meiji Industrial Revolution.\u2019

With a 200-year-old map in hand, join a local guide to discover why this district has survived with its town scenery of earthen walls and natsumikan oranges. Along the way, solve clues with our fun Hagi Bingo game while exploring the historic streets.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Outer Moat of Hagi Castle<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    Once dividing the castle grounds from the surrounding castle town, this moat also bordered a horse-riding ground used by samurai.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Earthen Walls of the Former Toida Masuda Family Residence<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    Among the longest walls in the Horiuchi district, preserving the Edo-period townscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Former Masuda Family Watchtower<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    A grand watchtower with lattice windows, used to guard the Kita-no-Somon Gate and the horse-riding grounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
